President Trump In Focus as Final Week of Term Begins
All eyes will be on the US as the politically tumultuous start to 2021 continues with this being the President’s final full-week of the current term. Economic data will also be in the spotlight after last week’s US non-farm payrolls data printed in negative territory.
As the new week gets underway, Democrats are pushing the prospect of another impeachment process, whilst also urging Vice-President, Mike Pence to consider invoking Amendment 25, which would declare the President unfit to carry out his duties. Whatever happens, this week will no doubt be an important one with President Trump rumoured to have more pardons planned; he does not intend to go out quietly.
Economic data will be in the spotlight after the US shed 140,000 in December. Retail sales and the consumer price index will be on tap. We’ll also have speeches from various central bankers with the highlight being one from Fed Chairman, Jerome Powell.
Vaccine rollouts will also be on watchlist as will the UK domestic situation with many businesses working their way around the new procedures and processes for dealing with the European Union.
