Dollar in the Driving Seat

As Thursday’s European trading session gets underway, investors will continue to focus on the US dollar. A raft of strong US economic data, mixed with hawkish rhetoric from Fed Chairman Powell, has reignited the greenback rally, taking the GBPUSD to recent lows. Whilst the pair is holding its ground above the $1.18 figure, the path of least resistance appears lower for the time being. The same remains true of the EURUSD currency pair, which has been supported by the $1.05 level after an almost 5-cent fall since the most recent ECB announcement.

Focus on the greenback will centre around Friday’s US non-farm payrolls report which is forecast to see an uptick of 200,000 jobs across the US economy in February. A print anywhere near this level could spur further USD gains as it reinforces the current notion that the Federal Reserve is slipping behind in its plight to fend off inflation. Stay tuned…!
